UK Regions
The largest administrative geographical areas of the UK are the 12 regions. This comprises Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland as individual regions, and England divided into 9 separate regions. These are London, North East, North West, Yorkshire, East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, East of England and South West.
The regions in England vary greatly in both land area and population size. The South East of England has the largest population, with 9,379,833 inhabitants, whilst the North East only has a population of 2,683,040, accounting for 5% of the English population.
Whilst London covers just 1% of the land area of England, it represent 16% of the population, with 8,866,180 inhabitants.
Regions in England no longer have devolved functions within government, but are often used for statistical and administrative purposes.
